Piper Cub J 3

San Andres Island & Barranquilla

The planes I have been flying are either RTF or a friends gift, so I wanted to try and build up a kit. Since I liked the Piper J3 Cub a kit from great planes was ordered in .60 size, it comes with almost everything needed, just the radio, the engine, some extra wood and hardware was bought on the side.

To get started a good flat surface was needed so a sheet rock sheet was put on top of a couple of tables put side by side and bingo what a great surface, you may even stick the t pins in it very easily.

Plans over the Sheet Rock Table and the Tail Feathers I started with the Tail feathers

Then with the wing and followed with the fuselage and back to the wing . Here are some pics of how is it going along.

On Floats This is how it will fly it has not flown yet.

The Plane as October 26 has not been flown yet , I have put a better engine on it, this to ease my mind of the extra weight added with the floats, the the engine to replace the FP 60 is an OS FX .61 , I had to modify a bit the cowl becuse it makes the engine overheat, also the float brakets are of Piano wire I left the aluminum main tires support only for the tires.

The plane has been as of January 2002 on sea trials, with out the wings, it performed great on the water even at full engine rpm, it has a lot of water spray so a water deflector will be added to the inside of the floats, will probably use x-ray film material to make it, is light and thin.

Finally the Piper flew, and it flew well, a mishap happen to my radio when it fell to the floor thus smashing the inside u shape electronic board which I fixed. see pictures. first fligt was on July 10 th 2003.

This plane is stil flying great, a bit of rust on the links and outside control bars, the engine has behave great, the change to 5 cell receiver battery pack has been good the control surfaces are quicker and stronger than before.

The plane is now (2006) in Barranquilla and ready to fly for the first time on wheels at the Juan Mina Los Halcones rc club.

Taking Off , off Cotton kayin flight above the boatthe 4 yellow and black wires where soldered to jump the break in board, if you do it test for heating and shorts Great flyng , 8 knot winds
